What are you doing to save money?

I have been thinking a lot lately about how to get back on the frugal track…it is very hard for me to be frugal when I am working so many hours. You have to take one step at a time and be happy with the money-saving things you are doing.  My goal this week is to be happy with what I am doing.

  • Cooked dinner at home
  • Hung clothes on the line Saturday
  • Packed the boys lunch
  • brought a used text-book for college class

I am happy with the small victories and can’t get bogged down. What are you doing to save money?

How does your Garden grow….

This time of the year is wonderful. I don’t know about you, but when I get produce from the garden it is so satisfying providing for your family. We are starting to see some of the fruits of our labor. Last year we didn’t even attempt to garden….now we know my husband was not feeling well with his heart. Now that his heart is fixed we are starting to get back to our frugal way of life.  Today, we visited relatives and they grow a few things we have never tried  blackberries and potatoes.

The blackberries were huge and when we picked them I was pleasantly surprised there were no thorns…..easy to pick and I wasn’t attacked by the bush. We were given some starts so maybe in a few years we will have some too!

These potatoes were grown by using small potatoes that are in your bag of potatoes that have 3 or 4 growing eyes. If the potato is small plant  the whole potato if it is a big potato cut in half or quarter.  Here is a link.

I am thinking we can all share and help each other learn. Share your wisdom with a friend or relative.

Practice makes perfect!

We are very blessed because our school offers choir, band and orchestra Instrument lesson. I know it isn’t always possible to give your child Private lessons. When things were tight we did discuss not following through with the Private lessons. I don’t know how we did, but it all worked out.

Our children have private lessons and the Toledo symphony offers a youth orchestra. All we ask of our children is to practice. One of our boys wasn’t practicing. Randy and I decided if he didn’t practice he would pay his lesson fee.

Week one: We told him and still he didn’t practice. So I took the money out of his account.

Week two: no practicing and I used his money. He was ticked and wanted to know why I was doing this….I told him why use my money each week if he wouldn’t practice. he thought is was dumb and all he had to do is practice.

Week three: No practice…….His money

Week four: His money and then he said “I don’t think it is fair you used my money I am saving it” I said all you have to do is practice and dad and I will pay.

Week five: I am hearing music each day. I think he got the message!

Another valuable lesson! Candy

Stretching your grocery budget

How can we stretch our grocery budget with everything on the rise? Here are a few to help.

  • At least one meatless meal a week, Meatless Monday is an easy way to remember. My husband is a meat and potato kind of guy and he didn’t think he would like this idea….Now he is used to it!
  • Cook at home and use or recreate your leftovers.
  • Shop your cupboards and try to use what you have. I am always surprised what I find when I look in the cupboard and freezer.  Take an inventory you may be surprised.
  • Just because you have a coupon for an item doesn’t mean it is the best deal. You will find if you take the time you will get the best deal.
  • Use store loyalty cards if your store offers them. (Kroger’s is a good one)
  • Make those Friday Night pizzas at home and save $10-$25
  • When you would like to make an extra purchase ask yourself one question. Do I need it or do I want it? I would say most of the time I leave with the extra purchase.
  • Use less of your products and make it last longer.
  • Bartering- Swapping resources is a way to stay in control when money is tight.
  • If you have a garden this will help your budget in the warm summer months. Plant things you like and when your produce is ready freeze or can.
  • Plan your meals for a few reasons

1.      You are less likely to eat out if you have your meal planned.

2.      You have all the ingredients you need.

3.      If you plan for a month you are more likely to find a sale.

I would love to hear how you are stretching your grocery budget. Have a great day, Candy

Coupon 101… Where to begin!

I have been out of the coupon loop….I just wasn’t using coupons. Last week I started again and I had saved $53.56. What a great feeling and I have missed it.

For our daughter graduation dinner and Mother’s day I wanted to take my family out to dinner. My husband accused me of not being frugal. This was a cut to my heart. Well, I went to Kroger which had quadruple gas points and bought our Apple Bee gift cards and now can save on out gas. This is an idea with gas prices skyrocketing. Right now Kroger has double gas points if you buy a gift card.  Just a thought!

Coupons….Where to begin

  • You need coupons- You can buy the Sunday paper, ask friends or relatives to save their coupons if they aren’t using them, Computer Coupons, Website coupons from the stores to the product.
  • How to store your coupons….. I use a binder and my dear friend Paula at Monroe on a budget uses a coupon box. We both love our way….You have to find what work for you.
  • Learn the coupon lingo here is a list Paula and I have used for our Shopping on a budget course.
  • There are many coupon blogs that do all the hard work of matching the store to the coupon in our area. It is a lot of hard work and time and they do it for us to save. Wonderful!
  • Learn your stores coupon policy. I called my store when I started uses the coupons.
  • Don’t think on your first coupon try you are going to save hundreds….small steps and celebrate each little victory.

Let me know how your coupon adventures are going. Have a blessed day, Candy

Add the chow mein noodles. Mix the noodles by  to get them evenly coated with the chocolate mixture.Lay a piece of waxed paper over two cookie sheets. Drop golf ball clusters on the cookie sheets to cool and set. Add a few colored candies as eggs to the nests.

30 ways to save money on gas

Buckle your seat belts gas is on the rise!

  1. Park in the first parking spot you see. The walk will do you good and you won’t waste as much gas driving around.
  2. Take off slowly from a full stop. They call this jack rabbit starts. Will have dramatic effects on your gas mileage; move slowly, will help save you money at the pump.
  3. Watch for gas trucks at the station- When there is new gas being pumped in this mixes up the sediment at the bottom and is very hard on your car and tank.
  4. Don’t park close to the door of a store or you may be wasting gas idling and waiting for customer to pass before you can back up.
  5. Slow down and at constant speed. Braking, speeding up and slowing down waste gas. Use your cruise control!
  6. Keep all tires inflated to the pressure as recommended for your car. Learn to change a tire!
  7. Combine errands and plan your route.
  8. Walk between stops. Park in between locations and walk.
  9. An idling car gets 0 miles to a gallon. If it is extremely cold we warm our car up for 10 or 15 minutes before we drive off. This will help the engine by not to run thick oil through it.
  10. Use the lowest recommended octane for your car. Check your owner’s manual for recommended octane. Higher octane is more expensive and the wrong octane could damage your car.–Our work vehicle can use E85 which is cheaper but the mileage wasn’t as well. **
  11. Some stations offer membership rewards. Look for deals
  12. Look ahead to see the oncoming lights. Coast why be in a rush to stop.
  13. Check your oil and get a tune up. This will extend the life of you engine.
  14. Keep your car washed and cleaned. This will help in the resale of it.
  15. Don’t speed this will save on gas and on tickets.
  16. Typically gas is cheaper in the middle of the week.
  17. Buy your gas from a busy station and get fresher gas and this is also better for your car.
  18. Gas stations around exit ramps seem to have higher gas prices.
  19. Tighten the gas cap and avoid fumes from releasing. I have had the check engine light come on because I didn’t have the cap on tight…..this may save on a mechanic call too!
  20. Pull all the way through a parking spot, so you don’t have to back up and save money.
  21. Hypermiling is where you are always looking ahead to not have to stop completely (be aware of your surrounding so you don’t have to make a lot of stop and starts). This saves gas.
  22. Avoid luggage or trunk racks and you’ll get better gas mileage.
  23. If you rest your hand on the gear shift, results in unnecessary wear on your transmission which could cost you money.
  24. Right turns on red save gas because you aren’t idling.
  25. Put you name and phone number on the inside of your hub caps and save money and time looking for them. Chances are someone will call you.
  26. Lighter cars get better gas mileage. Empty that trunk out!
  27. Fill up early in the morning, gas expands in the heat of the day and you’ll get less for your money.
  28. Call ahead before you make an unfruitful trip and save gas.
  29. Don’t top off your gas tank this when the pump stops you stop that extra gasoline will either be sucked into the vapor recovery tube or overflow. Either way you will end up paying for gas that you don’t get.
  30. Car pool when you can.

If you have any to add I would love to hear. Have a blessed day, Candy

Will work for food!

A church sign read and thought it was fitting for all who are struggling.

Trying times are not the time to stop trying.

Don’t give up and as my grandma Young would  say “better days are coming!” I feel like they are just around the corner.

There are so many people struggling. I have seen more people standing on the corner with a sign that reads “Will work for food”  I am a little leery because last year a lady came to our church asking for food. I gave her a bag of food and she said “What do you expect me to do with this?” I said it is a bag of food she said”I take the bus I can’t carry this I want money or a Kroger gift card”  When I told her I didn’t have any money to give her she left the bag of food. That changed me…….

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”  Chinese Proverb

How can we learn to fish and care for ourselves and family? I don’t know about you, but when we are the most broke we actually eat better. Why? Because I plan I look at what we have and take the time to prepare.

  1. Shop in you own cupboards….Look at what you have you may be surprised.
  2. Smaller potions~ Why do we feel like we have to fill up our whole plate? Half the time I think why did I eat so much. Try using smaller plates and see if we are satisfied.
  3. Don’t eat after 7pm this will help save food and you will be healthier.
  4. Drink water
  5. Church suppers are usually a free will offering. You will get a great meal and great fellowship.
  6. Add things to your meal that will fill you up and/or spread your meal Like rice, noodles or a piece of bread.
  7. Plan for leftovers you can make 1 meal into two. recreate your leftovers or have 1 night a week leftover night were your family eats up all those leftovers. Even the Lord talked about saving Leftovers. “When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” John 6:12
  8. Using coupons is really work for food. It takes work, but you can really get a nice stockpile going. I have heard some say “I hate coupons because I buy things I don’t need just so I can use the coupon” This may be true, but I have found many things I would have not bought if I didn’t have a coupon that has made our life easier. Like Pillsbury pizza crust.

I would love to hear how you really work to save money. Have a blessed day, Candy

Leftover ideas

Use your leftovers- a money saver right under your nose!

Even the Bible talks about leftovers “when they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” John 6:12

I don’t know about you, wasting food just seems like wasting money. I feel like a total frugal fraud if I throw away leftovers. Here are a few things that will help so we don’t throw our leftovers away.

  1. I used to save all the little containers like cottage cheese and cool whip to save money on little buying leftover containers, but now I use a coupon when I need leftover containers. Why because the leftover containers store-bought are see-through and I am less likely to throw them away because I can see what is in them.
  2. when you plan a meal plan for those leftovers. This week we had leftover chicken breast the next day we had wok and used it up. You can do this with any kind of meat.
  3. We seem to always have an extra plate of food with our teenagers coming and going. If we do have an extra plate of food it is a great lunch the next day.
  4. leftover vegetables go into a leftover container in the freezer. I drain the juice and just add the vegetables and when I make a soup or a pot pie I add the those vegetables.
  5. Leftover cereal, crackers or chips you know not enough for a full serving, but you hate to throw it out. Crunch them up and add them to a meatloaf we have add all of them to one meatloaf and it turned out great…..
  6. leftover bread- make bread crumbs. You have just have a few pieces or the bag was left open and they are drying out. put them on a cookie sheet and after you have cook dinner and shut the oven off slide the cookie sheet in the over and use the leftover heat to dry them out. Here are directions I have found. I keep our bread crumbs in a jar.

What are some ways you use your leftovers?  I would love to hear. Have a blessed day, Candy
