Growing Green Onions

I read this some while ago and I just had to try it to see if it works. I bought green onions to put on top of our bean dip for New years eve. They leftover was in the fridge and I trimmed all of them off and put them in water.

and one week later look what we have….

The water needs to be changed every so often to keep the roots happy and healthy. Green onions can top potatoes, noodles or salads…..just cut them up. You can keep uses the plant you and eventually it will stop growing and then you know it is time to start another one!

Have a blessed day! Candy

Happy Thanksgiving

Today, I am going to reflect on all the many blessings that surround me. I think so many times when we are struggling to make ends meet we don’t take the time to be grateful what we do have.

Have a blessed Thanks Giving! Candy

What are you doing to save money?

I have been thinking a lot lately about how to get back on the frugal track…it is very hard for me to be frugal when I am working so many hours. You have to take one step at a time and be happy with the money-saving things you are doing.  My goal this week is to be happy with what I am doing.

  • Cooked dinner at home
  • Hung clothes on the line Saturday
  • Packed the boys lunch
  • brought a used text-book for college class

I am happy with the small victories and can’t get bogged down. What are you doing to save money?

Is there life after cable?

We bought a digital antenna in January and just finally decided we could live without cable.  All Huner’s are still alive. When Randy hooked it up and we got 16 channels except for 13 and 11…. we made the leap we are committed….. I wish I could have done it sooner. We couldn’t figure out why we weren’t getting our favorite channel…..then came on the light bulb… we had purchased a UHF antenna and not a VHF/UHF antenna. We then purchased one and we still don’t get 11 or 13 but the 16 other channels. We are still trying to figure out what to do to get these channels. I read an article that when TV stations went Digital Buckeye cable vision our local cable service received 5000 more customers because they couldn’t get their favorite channels.

I am not going to get the cable back I really want to use this time to save money. We can watch these channels on tv through the computer. I will let you how that goes. I have to say there is life after cable!

Have a great day, Candy

Keeping cool in this heat

keeping cool in this 90+ weather. I have never been into the whole using of our air conditioner but on days like today it is a blessings. I read a list of ideas to keep cool and here are a few

  • Run cold water over your wrist for a minute every hour or so.
  • Wear lighter clothing

I have a few of my own

  • Drink ice water
  • go outside every so often and when you go back in your home the air feels heavenly.
  • If you don’t have air conditioning find a location that does. The mall is free you can go and sit awhile or window shop. The library is also air-conditioned.
  • Senior centers have cooling locations that are free and you also get some fellowship.
  • Close the curtains and keep the sun out.
  • We have a window air condition so I close off the rooms we aren’t using during the day. Close closet door too no sense cooling them and wasting energy.
  • ceiling fans just feeling a breeze makes me cooler!

Keep cool! If you have any tips to add please do,  Candy

Busy and frugal…..equals frugal fraud

Busy and frugal….. I have to admit I have been in a frugal funk. I am extremely busy and sometimes lack of time can put a crimp in my frugal lifestyle. I have been feeling like I am a frugal fraud ( a term my husband has coined for our family when we are not living our frugal lifestyle) Today, I am feeling hopeful again….I actually hung clothes on the line! Days like today are great and the clothes dry quickly!

I won’t be having a garden this year…..I first time in 22 years. I have finally made peace with it and am telling myself next year is a new year.

Most of us are in different places in our lives and some are “more”  frugal then others and that is ok. Anything we do to save is better than doing nothing.

Today is July 1 and I am going to start fresh and you can too. Little things add up, it takes one step at a time. Have a blessed day!

School is out for the summer…oh my

Today,  is the last day of school for my children. I always get a happy and yet overwhelmed feeling. Happy things will relax, but overwhelmed thinking what are some things they may like to do.

I have a feeling this year sleeping may be more important than all of the years before….I have all teenagers now!

I love our Libraries and their summer reading programs. Many have fun summer activites and authors.

Barnes and Noble  2010 Summer reading and a download for a activity book.

Toledo Metroparks have compiled a list of 50 things to do in the Metroparks. Here is a PDF of all the kids activities this summer many are free.

The Library in our area always have great things for the kids to do. Rossford Public Library and the Toledo-Lucas Co. Library

The few weeks have been crazy with baseball. If you have any activities to add please feel free. Have a blessed day Candy
