Frugal Diva!

This afternoon I stopped home for lunch and turned on tv and watched a clip for Diva Exchange parties.

What’s the best way to save money on clothing? Swap with friends! The Diva Exchange is a way for everyone to dress like a diva — for less.

You can clean out your closet, gab with your girlfriends and give back at the same time. It’s called the Diva Exchange.

“Diva Exchange is where women come and bring clothes out of their closet or shoes and accessories that they are not wearing and we swap them,” says creator Marian Bell.

Here’s how to host your own:

  • Invite all of your friends (and even their friends) to your house for cocktails and bites.
  • Charge a small admission fee ($5 or so) that will be donated to the charity of your choice.
  • Ask your guests to clean out their closets and bring any clothes that don’t fit or they’re tired of wearing.
  • Invite friends with home businesses to set up shop at a table at you party.
  • Have fun and swap clothes all night long!
  • At the end of the party, donate any leftover clothes to a local charity or shelter.

Very frugal thinking! Have a great day, Candy

How can I reduce my insurance premiums?

This is from the Ohio Dept of Insurance site:

How can I reduce my insurance premiums?

There are number of things you can do to reduce your insurance premium, such as:

1. Shop around!

2. Consider raising deductible.

3. Drive safely.

4. Make improvements to your home.

5. Add smoke detectors, alarm system, etc.

6. Live a healthy lifestyle.

7. Bundle policies. (for instance, you may receive discounts if you purchase your homeowners and auto insurance from the same company)

Insurance savings…. We decided to shop around for auto insurance. We have had the same company for 23 years and he has always been helpful but we thought maybe we could do better.. We have not had tickets or accidents. We had 2 daughters 21 and 18 on our insurance and with our oldest married we decided to shop around.

  • Call your current insurance company and see if they can discount your rates at all.
  • Ask if there are any discounts you may be qualified for like good student, multiple policies ( if you also have your home owners with them), If you pay monthly you also may find a discount.
  • My husband called 3-4 different agencies he suggests having a pen and paper handy for all the information they give you. Then you can compare each one.
  • When you find the best quote you can call your current agent and see if he can meet or beat the quote….ours could not so we switched and our saving over $1200.00 a year on car insurance and $500.00 a year on our home owners.

I Won’t turn the heat up

Where to begin to keep more money in your household. I like to keep the heat at 64°-68° Here are a few of the things we do.

  1. In the morning open your curtains and let the sunshine in….in the evening close them and keep the heat in.
  2. When windows are locked they also keep your heat in.
  3. Rugs on bear floors- bare floors are cold floors and rugs will warm the room
  4. Run our humidifier on low. Moist air feels warmer than dry air.
  5. When I was a kid my dad would say “what do you think I am heating the outdoors, Shut that door!”  Make sure to shut the doors when you enter or exit your home.
  6. Draft dodgers for doors or windows click  here for directions. I have a rug in front of each door in our home at night before you go to bed you can put the rug lapping over door and floor to help with drafts.
  7. Leaving the hot water of a bath of dishes keeps the heat in the room. Drain when the water cools
  8. Pop the oven a little when done cooking to let the heat out until it cools. Same with the dishwasher.
  9. Wear socks and a sweater
  10. We keep a throw blanket on the back of each chair and if you are cold you cover up.
  11. Close closet doors and keep rooms closed you are not using

How do you keep warm? I would love to hear, Candy

TV without Cable

Happy New Year! Every year since we got cable we would watch the Twilight Zone Marathon and this year as many of you know we got rid of cable some months back. We decided we were going to try to watch it through the computer on the TV. I had heard you can watch TV shows through your computer and watch them on the TV. I bought a S-video cord….Please keep in mind every computer is different and so you may need a different type of cord. I am happy to say we had a great family night and watch Twilight Zone all evening!

I was amazed all the different shows we could watch on the TV through the computer. Cable shows I enjoyed until we got rid of our cable. Most TV websites have the shows on their sites. You do have commercial like the TV, but My husband said “I don’t so much mind watching commercials since I am not paying for it” We paid for cable and still had to watch commercials…

This is also an idea if you lack time….you can watch a show you missed at a later date. Remember just because you don’t have cable you don’t have to be in the Twilight Zone you can be watching it!

Gift wrapping on a budget

I don’t know why, but every year at this time I start to panic….what are we going to do about Christmas and I think this year it is going to be more stressful with a wedding the week before.

This is a re-post from last year and I have added some different ideas.

1. This is frugal tip I have done for years. Gift bags and the tissue paper I save over the year. I iron the tissue paper and put it in the bag and store until I am ready to use, easier storage and it looks like you went out and bought the bag and the tissue paper.

2. This year many are going green and many stores in the near future are not going to have plastic bags or they will charge you 5 cents for each bag. Why not buy some reusable shopping bags put your gift in it and attach a bow and they will have 2 gifts in one.

3. You can wrap in newspaper or how about a map you can receive free maps at AAA.

4. I don’t have the ambition this year but How about after Christmas pick up Christmas print fabric and make fabric bags. I know for little ones it is about the ripping of paper, but when they are older I think they would be happy with this idea.

4. Baby blankets for baby gifts

5. A scarf perhaps and it can be another two in one gift.

6. Colorful fabric which can be fabric, bandanna’s, or dish towel.

7. We have done this paper the kids decorate. You can use a paper bag cut open, the kids decorate then ready to use.

8. Boxes or tins you have received from years past

8. Wrapping paper is 1/2 off at the end of the season, so if you just can’t part with the tradition of  wrapping paper.

9. If you make a gift basket you can leave it unwrapped and present it that way. My dear friend Shelly made this one. Showing it doesn’t have to be a basket to be a gift basket…. anything you can use to present your gift. Thanks Shelly for the idea!

10. I save the bows from Christmas and reuse them. I bag them up and use them all year.

11. The gift tags….a sweet little lady at church collect Christmas cards after the holiday and then cuts the picture out along with an index card using pinking shears. These were in the office for all the busy teachers to use for Christmas. I just love the idea…

If you have some different ideas please add. Have a great day, Candy

Happy Fall…..Waffles!

I have been busy as I am sure you have also. A month ago a friend had told me she had made 80 waffles. I asked her why so many?  She makes them ahead and freezes them and her children have them for breakfast. I don’t have a waffle iron but she suggested I borrow her waffle maker and she how it works so I did. What a great idea….I thought  this week I made waffles…..lots of waffles.

I used a pizza cutter to separate them and  to clean up the edges. I let them dry by flipping them every so often. I put eight in a ziploc bag and got as much air out as I could and the stacked them in the freezer.

I didn’t quite have enough have enough batter for 80 but I got to 60. I am finding my boys even like them for an after school snack.

Thanks to Lena for the great idea and the use of her waffle iron. Have a great day and enjoy God’s beautiful artwork. God’s blessings, Candy

Using Cash….it hurts!

I don’t know if this happens to you, but I know it hurts to spend when I am using cash. I seem to be more aware of what I spend using cash instead of my debit. When I use cash I ask myself some questions before the purchase….

  • Do I need the item?
  • Can I find it cheaper?

Many times I will tell myself …no and I hang on to that money a little longer. We have been also been trying to use cash for groceries. I use my calculator start with the amount I have and subtract each item. We are more likely to get what we need and we haven’t went over yet.

I love Dave Ramsey, but I was having problems with the envelope system. I have found a new system and we are just getting started with it and I will update you… a jar system I found a site that has a budget work sheet and it calculated   exactly what amount for the week to stick in the jars it also was a great visual of what percent % I am spending in each area of my life. Gail Vaz-Oxlade site Debt free forever here is her budget worksheet. Let me know what you think!

Have a great week, Candy

Is there Life after cable #2

We have been without cable for about 2 weeks and I think the kids are getting used to it. Jacob said the first week  “it is like a prison here without cable” I didn’t have the heart to tell him they have cable in prison! We didn’t have the VHS channels ABC or CBS even though our antenna was a VHS/UHF antenna. Randy and I just couldn’t figure it out until Friday. We decided to go to Radio Shack and ask for a FM filter that could be jamming the VHS signal an idea a man at our local CBS station gave us and you know what…..

This little thing clips over the antenna wire outside on the wire. It cost a little over $5 and now have VHS.

Snap on Ferrite Data-line Filter

Another way to save! Yes, there is Life after cable.

Have a great week, Candy

Is there life after cable?

We bought a digital antenna in January and just finally decided we could live without cable.  All Huner’s are still alive. When Randy hooked it up and we got 16 channels except for 13 and 11…. we made the leap we are committed….. I wish I could have done it sooner. We couldn’t figure out why we weren’t getting our favorite channel…..then came on the light bulb… we had purchased a UHF antenna and not a VHF/UHF antenna. We then purchased one and we still don’t get 11 or 13 but the 16 other channels. We are still trying to figure out what to do to get these channels. I read an article that when TV stations went Digital Buckeye cable vision our local cable service received 5000 more customers because they couldn’t get their favorite channels.

I am not going to get the cable back I really want to use this time to save money. We can watch these channels on tv through the computer. I will let you how that goes. I have to say there is life after cable!

Have a great day, Candy
