Step One- Build your emergency fund

Randy and I had our first Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University. I have to say I am so excited to learn how to manage our money.  Our first assignment is to quickly start and emergency fund of  $1000.00.

Dave Ramsey gave us a lot of food for thought. It is funny how many of the ideas you know, but don’t put into practice.

  • Live within your means or below - How many things are Randy and I doing to help us live beyond our means? The quick trips through McDonald’s because we are too tired from work and We deserve it. I have to change my thinking to we deserve to be debt free!
  • Christmas comes every year on December 25th! Why am I stressed and shocked Christmas is coming? We need to plan better.
  • Become a plastic surgeon- The cheapest education you’ll ever receive. Cut up your credit cards if you have them. You always will have an excuse to use them if you have them!

  • Dave talks about baby steps little things you can do to grow up to financial peace. Peace about my finances is a calming thought.

It works, I have met a thirty something family. They are 10 years our junior and still working to become debt free, but I can imagine they will be there soon and I hope Randy and I aren’t that far behind.

Buying a used car

Good Morning! Many of you may know My younger daughter is 16 years old. Things have been tight this year and we couldn’t buy Lyndsey a car. It was a struggle for her and me when her friends all turned 16 and the parents bought them a car. Lyndsey took the bull by the horns got herself a job and has earned money for a car. Yesterday, she bought a 1995 Pontiac Sunfire. I am extremely proud and I think she will appreciate it more since she earned it herself. We have the car for a few days to get it inspected and pending that.

Tips for buying a used car

  1. Check the Vehicle Identification on carfax- this will let you know if the car has ever had an accident or problems with the car.
  2. Check the Kelley Blue Book for the pricing of the car you are looking at.
  3. Take your car to a mechanic before you purchase the vehicle so you don’t have any surprises. When buying a used car it is going to have things go wrong, but it is better to have a heads up at what you are looking at.
  4. Look in the glove box for oil change and maintenance records.
  5. I have found a used car buying checklist click here
  6. Check with your insurance agent for insurance pricing before you do purchase.

I’ll let you know this weekend if she is a car owner. Candy

Eating together saves money!

Our family loves to eat together, a time to talk and enjoy each other. We have been extremely busy with our new cleaning gig, but I won’t stop our eating together time.  I noticed one topic is how much the meal cost. We usually stay in the $3- $7 range. last night we had:

  • Cheese Ravioli/Rigatoni = $2.99
  • Homemade Spaghetti Sauce = $0
  • Garlic Bread = $1.64
  • Bag Salad = 99¢

Dinner for 5 was $5.62

We can really find inexpensive meals if we just look and prepare.  I know it is hard with school back in session. Here are some tips to prepare inexpensive meals and if you have any please do share.

  1. Plan your meals- If we plan a month of meals which sounds like a lot I know, but sales come up and coupons can really make for some cheaper meals.
  2. Use leftovers- pack them in your lunch or re-create them for dinner.
  3. Have bread with dinner it is a great filler and stretcher. When I was a kid my mom always have bread and butter with dinner.
  4. Rice, noodles, potatoes and beans with your meals are filling and inexpensive.
  5. We have a salad with dinner. This something Randy’s family always did and we have continued. Randy’s folks had 8 people to feed at dinner.
  6. One pot meals- like a casserole are filling and inexpensive.
  7. Drink milk or water with dinner. Better for your health and they will fill you up!
  8. See Comments for Paula at Monroe on a Budget’s tip. Thanks Paula Great tip!
  9. Your turn to add.

Making Mental Memories!

This weekend, Randy helped a friend move. I decided I was going to surprise him and paint the garage. I went to Sherwin Williams in Maumee and told the man behind the counter I was going to paint today. He said “what kind of paint do you need? I said what is the best and he said what kind do you have on the garage now Latex or oil?  Boy.. I didn’t know it was so complicated!

He shared with me how you can tell the difference and I can’t wait to share this tip: Take a white cloth and put rubbing alcohol on it and rub the paint if paint is on your rag it is latex if there isn’t it is oil!  We have Latex and I bought primer and starting painting and finished ….0ne of the 4 sides. The wood was thirsty!

Yesterday, after church we started another side and Randy told me I better pick my Rhubarb. I made a rhubarb cake (a crisp) and wanted to take a picture if it for you, but when I made it back to the pan this is what I found-

Cheer 009

When Ben got home he said is that rhubarb cake? I said yes it is and he said “the heck with homework I’m eating cake!” then it was gone → The world fastest eating family something I will always remember!

Families Coping

If you didn’t get to see our families coping video

We are very blessed because our school offers choir, band and orchestra Instrument lesson. I know it isn’t always possible to give your child Private lessons. When things were tight we did discuss not following through with the Private lessons. I don’t know how we did, but it all worked out.

Who’s on first?

Good Morning! I have been so busy this week I have let my duties here slide.

Randy got his first check this week and I have to say it is a great feeling. A feeling that I can breathe and relax. We have hope and are coming up with a plan to reach our debt-free goal. There are many ideas on how to obtain this goal and I have to say it can get confusing. Who’s on First… Who gets paid first?

  • Pay yourself first- I have to say I have never paid myself first and am going to try at least pay myself second.
  • Give the Lord your first fruits- With many of us struggling it is still important to tithe. Our family has been very blessed with work and it is all thanks to my Lord.
  • Emergency Fund- I know if you can’t save an emergency fund is really not a easy task. Some say $1000 and others 6 months worth of living expenses.
  • In the area of credit card pay more on the one with the smallest amount to get it paid off when that debt is eliminated then pay that extra on the next bill and work on a type of snowball effect.

I want to work on these points and see what you are all doing and start a plan!

Have a wonderful day, Candy

Just Do It!

Many of you know I am struggling with getting organized and meal planning. I received a letter from Ann, a dear friend from my church. Ann gave me some great tips that I thought they were worth sharing:

  1. While making dinners write them down. Ann has a summer and winter menu. Ann uses menu calenders
  2. Plan your menu around what you have on hand or what is on sale.
  3. Organized Home website has a wealth of information.
  4. Have a check off sheet for your freezer and pantry and you will know what you need your next shopping trip.
  5. Ann uses tons of sticky notes to help her organize and I am going to try her tips!

Thanks Ann!

Randy and I have been working my cleaning job and his. We are extremely busy and I am not complaining I am thrilled the Lord has blessed us with work. Coming home after work to a home that  my children are in it all day isn’t as thrilling.  We had the family meeting and I explained if something is on the floor pick it up or you are done with your glass put it in the dishwasher. Sounds pretty easy….right? Our new theme is Just Do It! I printed little papers for around the house that read Just Do it!  I have to say I think it is helping so far. We are a crazy family with family meetings and in-services, but I need to do what works.

If you have any tips please do share! Candy

Family dinners?…….

Our family has been quite busy with baseball, instrument practices and a new job. The first thing to go is great family dinners. When I was a kid my mom always seemed to have dinner on the table by 5pm. In our home lately you are lucky if you eat let alone together. We try not to run through the drive thru for $1 meals but it is tempting so I don’t hear those four little words “Mom, what’s for dinner?” I am on the search for quick and easy meals. Last night we had Hot dogs, yes just hot dogs!

I like casseroles and one pot dinners. My husband likes to cook amazing meals, but they take a lot of time and he usually cooks on the weekends. Here are some ideas I need to remember.

  • Crockpot cooking is a great way to have a meal when you get home from work.
  • Using your leftovers- I hate wasting leftovers and by using them you are adding extra to your budget.
  • Old stand by meals like grilled cheese and tomato soup.
  • make extra ingredients for other meals. brown extra meat or cook extra rice for a future meal.
  • cooking at home recipe sites

I need to get organized with meal planning I have been so busy with family and work our family dinners are lax. another thing to get in order.

Any help would be appreciated so it isn’t easier to do this and waste my money, Candy

Staycations

Wow, I was hip before hip was cool! Staycations are when you find things in your area to do and not have the expense of travel and accommodation’s.

I have always wanted to see Mt. Rushmore in person, but I think it won’t be this year with Randy starting his new job. There are many things to see just in the area or a car ride away. I am looking and hopefully in the next few days I will have some ideas.

This weekend we spent some time with our friends in Luna Pier, Michigan. I loved walking the beach picking up rocks and shells. A very relaxing time, but it was even better to get home. As the summer progresses I have a working against the clock type of feeling trying to work and have a good summer for my kids.

Being a kid summer is supposed to be fun and adventure. The days of playing cowboys and Indians or loading up the family in the station wagon heading to the Grand Canyon are not as common. Families are different and time together is harder with two incomes. I am going to take a few weeks off with my kids in August before school starts and hopefully have some fun.

Budget Killers and the people that love them!

As I am thinking about things that really hurt our budget, a news headline is running through my head:

Budget killers and the people who love them!

Here is a running list of things that hurt your budget and if you have any to add please do.

  1. Eating Out- Our youngest in baseball and when you work all day and have a game it is easy to run through a drive thru but when you have games 4 nights a week it can really add up. Solution: We have been using our crock pot and trying to eat before the game.
  2. Speaking of games Concession stands can really kill a budget $ 2 pop. Solution: We have been buying our own and bringing a cooler.
  3. Quick trips to the store- When I run real quick to the store I seem to spend more. Solution: I have been trying to plan so I don’t have a quick trips and I take my coupons in case I see some great deal.
  4. Kids and Car insurance- Lyndsey our 16 year old just got her license and insurance is high. Solution: She gets a good grade discount and the insurance company offers a safe driver course and she will get a discount. No good grades, No drive incentive for her!
  5. A night at a movies- In our area a night at the movies is very expensive then add the refreshments and you have spent a small fortune. Solution: For our family we watch movies on our neighbors garage with a small projector and laptop. Sitting by the campfire this has become a neat tradition for us. For those who do not have this option. Make a movie night at home with library DVD’s.
  6. Coffee you don’t make yourself- I remember last year Kelsey my oldest was away at college and she told me her food money was going faster  then usual and I look at her online meal plan and realized you was having $4 latte’s a few times a day. Making your own coffee can save!
  7. Late fees and insufficient funds fees- Credit card and bank fees can really hurt your budget. By budgeting you can keep track of payment dates and your banking to help you not pay those extra fees. y paying your charge cards weekly you can really cut the interest. I have read some credit card companies will only let you make 2 payments a month but this will help you to become debt free. Another headline or song:Debt free as free as the wind blows as free as your saving grows. Debt free!
  8. Not organized- This is something I am working on.  I have a freezer and stockpile and if you don’t know what is in you inventory it is just wasting your money. Solution: Organize and inventory!
  9. Making wants your needs- When Randy and I were first married and  we had a well we deserve it attitude. We have since changed but learned and went on. Solutions: Distinguish between wants and needs
  10. Not having a budget and plan- When we do not have a budget or plan it is killed right away we need to set goals and chart our course to sail to our ultimate goal becoming debt free!
  11. Have a blessed day, Candy
