Frugal ways to stretch your budget

Wow, The more frugal friends I meet the more I love being a part. Tonight was our class at the Rossford Library and I total enjoyed the group in attendance and I have to say all had great tips to offer me in return. That’s what it  is all about, helping each other out and making our way through this economic time. Thank you to all who were there and Kristine at the Rossford Library. (I have linked to the next class in their series: learn to make your money work for you with Jeff Reitzel and I think we all want to learn that)

Some of the questions:

  • Where to buy in Bulk- In our area we have Sam’s Club and Costco they are both paid membership stores. If you can’t afford to pay for a membership there Gordon Food Service (GFS) Just like any other stores you need to know your prices but you can find some good prices.  Angelfood ministries or Great food for all are both great ways to stretch your budget. You pay $30 for a box of food, you prepay and pick it up at the distribution site. In our area it is mainly at churches but in Maumee we also have it at our  senior center.  We had a comment that if you happen to not like something in you box to pass it on to someone else. That was a great point!
  • “Are coupons really worth it? I buy things I don’t need” I think coupons are worth it. The secret to using coupon is using them when you can get the best bang for your buck . Sometimes I have a coupon for an item but find a better price on a different brand.
  • What are e-coupons? (electronic coupon) –  loaded onto store card and they do not double and they are considered manufacture coupons. ***Just make sure you know the exact item and have a list of what you have loaded onto the card so you don’t forget to use it.*** Kroger’s offer this service and we had a comment that organic products are offered.
  • What are some of the coupon sites you don’t have pay for? I like to go to websites of the products I like. Sometimes they have coupons for you to print or write that company and let them know you like there product and they sometimes send you coupons. I also love Walmart free samples because you receive a sample or trial size and a coupon for the product.
  • We talked about coupon storage. Many of us have different ideas on how to store our coupons. There is no right way, it is what works so you to use them. For me before I found the binder method I would rather not use coupons then dig through thinking I had a coupon and finding I didn’t.

What I loved about our evening is we all shared tips and ideas. For your tips and ideas to stretch your budget; email me at Candyh@dealwithitsimply.com

New PictureI also wanted to thank Marilyn from Marilyn’s money for the great door prizes she was so gracious to share with us. This is a picture of our lucky winners Linda and Heather with Paula and myself.

Ladies start your…..Savings and join the Royal Family

I have been using coupons since January and have saved over $300 and wonder why I didn’t start sooner. I want to share what I have learned with you.

You may wonder where do I start?

  • I went to a shopping on a budget class taught by Paula at Monroe on a budget and you can too.  May 14, 2009 at the Rossford Library. This post today is the basics and maybe we will see you at the library to learn more and become a Coupon Queen too!
  • Coupons needed: I starting with the Sunday Newspaper and asking those around me that don’t use coupon to save them for me. This way I built up my coupons. There are other coupons out there if we just look.  Check the manufactures websites, free samples and in Monroe at the library where Paula had her class, had a coupon box for the coupons people weren’t using ..free for the taking.
  • Decide which coupon storage system works for you. I use the binder but my good friend uses the box, yesterday the coupon mom was on TV and she uses a accordion folder. My binder is evolving as I am getting to see what is working and what is not. It is totally a what will work for you system.
  • Find out the coupon policy at your store. Each store is different. You can call or stop by their customer service desk.
  • Read the store flyer ad and see what is on sale. If you do not receive the paper you can look online for each stores sales ad. For me; there is something about opening that Sunday paper, pulling out the ads, coupons and starting the hunt! I see a movie deal…. The Coupon Hunter…. Ok, sorry talking about coupons makes me crazy!
  • Using coupons takes time and you are earning the money you save. LeAnn from Springfield a beginner using a binder told me it was hard work. She has taught me a thing or two about coupons and binders  from what she has learned. If you have tips let me know and I will share.
  • I found I get flustered while looking for my coupon is when I feel I am holding someone up behind me. I am getting faster and there are more of us out there, using them.
  • Make sure you take your coupons with you for those quick trips to the store! This has been the hardest thing for me to do. Now that I am learning what coupons I have,  it kills me to pay full price.
  • Coupons Pay off if you just take that first step and rev up for savings!

If I can be consider a Coupon Queen in 3 months you can too!

Paula and I hope to see you at the Rossford Library on May 14th, Candy

Help for your Grocery Budget

I went grocery shopping today and there are plenty of sales around if we just look. I started using coupons again in January. I thought it was worth retrying and learning to save and get “free Money”  In the last two weeks we have saved $175.95 on our grocery bill. If we can do it you can too. Our Family has a budget of $300 a month and now that we are using coupons and I am starting to think and plan more, it is getting easier to stay in that goal!  Here is some of what I am learning: A few may be repeats from an earlier post, but I think they are worth repeating

  • Make a menu then your shopping list. Sometimes I rearrange the menu, if I see something on sale that will add to my budget.
  • When you plan your menu make plans to reuse your leftovers. This will save money and you may be surprised what you can create!
  • Learn your stores policies for coupons, Price matching, club cards and even gas.
  • Don’t go to the store hungry, you may spend more.
  • Don’t linger in the store. I always seem to pick up more when I linger.
  • I realized this on a quick trip to the grocery store. I didn’t grab a cart and ran in to get a few things and could have grabbed more but my hands where filled, so I saved money! Also, go alone, when I take the kids I spend more because somehow they talk me into things.
  • Make the time to shop and plan. I impulse spend when I am in a hurry.
  • Coupons if you have them. For me I would buy things I didn’t need because I had a coupon, so now I only use what I need.  Just because you have a coupon doesn’t always make it the best deal. That is why I bring Randy or a calculator. ** I have been cutting out the coupons I don’t need like diapers and I place them on the product to help others save. (diapers are so expensive and new parents need a break!)**
  • Another coupon idea- I have asked a few of my clients that I noticed throw theirs away to save them for me so now I get 2 or 3 extras and when something is on sale I can buy more then one. I staple them together after I cut them out then they are together when I buy something. Helps me organize them a little better.(I need all the help I can get)
  • Shop the perimeter of the store for your items. Example: I found summer sausage in the center isle of the store for 3.99 and as I was shopping for other items there was another display for summer sausage on the outside wall for 2.99 same size, brand.
  • Stores are set up so we spend more money. Milk and food staples are always at the back point of the store. Why so you pass all the other items and buy more. You can’t blame them it’s a great idea. They have great marketing strategies and they know how to catch you.
  • Use cash only then you know you won’t go over. I don’t want to be embarrassed so I never seem to go over. Now that’s a real budget plan!
  • When you have a rebate for a product make sure to keep the receipt and rebate form together then when you use the product and need the UPC code it will be together to send it in and get your rebate money.
  • We do not buy non-grocery items at the grocery store unless it is a deal. Generally it is always cheaper at the dollar store and most will take your coupon for face value, but I still save.

If you have any tips to add please let me know candyh@dealwithitsimply.com  and I will share.

Have a blessed weekend and God’s Blessings, Candy

Triple coupons at Kroger 4/9- 4/12

Stel sent me this heads up this morning and she asked me to share:

I heard about this at Kroger this morning & double checked the paper to make sure…..For those who don’t receive or don’t have time to read The Blade here’s Kroger’s most recent promotion: From April 9 (today) thru April 12, Kroger is giving *triple* value on manufacturer’s coupons up to (& including)  50¢.  Electronic & Internet coupons are NOT part of this promotion. Stel wanted to add, this is in the greater Toledo area and not sure if in all locations so please check in other areas. Enjoy!

I am thinking stockpiling!  Thank you Stel for sharing with all of us!

Get Food!

Yesterday, was Got Food?  Today, I want to talk about something that is up and coming to get food, grocery auctions. After I watched the video I read the comments and someone asked;  “Am I missing something? Everybody at the auction bids against each other to RAISE the price of what they will all pay for the item? Why don’t they all just stop the bidding at 25 cents and get that price? And honestly, sounds like a terribly time-consuming way to shop. I shop with a menu and a list and can’t see this working with it!” I think it is another way to shop and those that were there seemed to love it. Me, I need a cart.( my Grandma was a little polish lady and I can picture in my head making the sign of the cross and saying .. oh, now I’ve seen everything!)

My goal to get food is using coupons:

I started my coupon binder and now I just have to remember to take with me when I go to the store. I have told you before I am all over town with my work, so I store jump to check out loss leaders and get a great deal. My goal is to place my new coupons in the binder on Sunday’s and keep it in my car.

Using coupons hasn’t been simple for me over the years. This year my goal was to try again and with the help of Paula at Monroe on a Budget and her coupon class I am trying again. Now, I just have to get in the habit of taking them with me!

picture-233

I separated the coupons and wrote on the clear page what the items were and This has helped me. In my first attempt to use coupons I used an envelope and I would think I had a coupon and search and not find it and it was frustrating for me and I stopped. This year with our family needed to watch our money. I remembered something my mom told me when I was a kid and have applied it to coupons she said “extra credit is like free money!” So I am thinking coupons are free money!

When the Sunday coupons come in I go through my binder and pull out the expired and put in new. I now staple any like coupons I have and it is easier for me when buying or getting rid of. Using coupons are time consuming, I am not going to lie, but the satisfaction of saving a few bucks is wonderful! Do you have any coupon or shopping advice? I would love to hear your tips!    candyh@dealwithitsimply.com

Have a great day and God’s Blessings, Candy
