Well, I know I got all of the Mom’s attention. We could all use some help and that’s why I love my dishwasher. We were married 10 years and 4 kids before we got ours and I love it. When we bought it we were told we would be saving money on water because it takes less to run then washing by hand and he was right!
Tips for your dishwasher:
- Only run a full load. It takes the same energy for one glass or a full load, so why not fill it.
- Remember Mom saying “Scrape your plate” Well she was right again. Scraping your plate rather the rinsing and using the garbage disposal save you money.
- We have two dispensers for detergent I only fill the one with a cover and My dishes are clean and save on the detergent.
- Homemade Rinse aid – Fill rinse aid dispenser with white vinegar. (I love vinegar!) The vinegar also cleans, disinfect and breaks up calcium deposits
- Cleaning equipment need to be cleaned. Make sure to clean out the bottom of your dishwasher. I can take mine apart and clean. Wipe the side and bottom. You won’t believe all the crud and how much better your dishwasher works.
- Our dishwasher racks had some rust on the tips. I bought a kit that you re-tip with a coating and put a new tip over each tip. Looks great and cost about $8. I thought part of being frugal is taking care of what you have, so I spent the $8. It was about a year ago and I have not had to replace any.
- The heating cycle is expensive to run so shut your dishwasher off before and open a crack and let them air dry. I have noticed plastic never dries so you may have to dry by hand.
- want to disinfect your dish sponge? Just put on the top rack of dishwasher and let it go through the cycle. Clean and disinfected!
I have been playing with the Homemade dishwasher soap for awhile and found the recipe I like.
Homemade Dishwasher Soap
1 C. Washing soda
1 C. Borax
1 C. cheap dishwasher powder soap
1 T. corn starch
Mix and store in a jar under the sink. When needed fill your dispenser and run as usual.
**The only thing I have found this recipe doesn’t clean off starchy potatoes residue well, so I keep store brand on hand. **
Do you have a Homemade cleaning recipe? I would love to hear your recipe and have a blessed day!
